Obesity – What about it?

Obesity is considered as an accumulation of excess body fat, which poses numerous risks to an individual’s health. It is defined by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of thirty and above.

BMI is a measure that shows the relationship between height and weight, which differs significantly between men and women. BMI is an effective tool, to evaluate obesity in a person. It is expressed as the measure of a person’s weight (in kilograms), divided by the square of his or her height (in meters).

Check your BMI

BMI is used to categorize an individual as underweight, normal, overweight or obese. A Body Mass Index that falls below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal, 25 to 30 falls under overweight and anything above 30 is obese.

Obesity is a disease, just like diabetes or high blood pressure. It is often an underlying cause, to a majority of health problems. 1/3rd of the people in the world are obese and India ranks third in obesity. “We consider that, along with smoking and accidents; obesity is also a major issue in this world.” a member quoted.

Obesity is not just about physical appearance. It is a more serious problem. It damages the body from within. Members from the Bangalore Bariatric Club highlighted that, obesity can be one of the underlying root causes of various health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, heart failures, gall stones, and sleep apnoea to name a few.
